Rakhi Gifts That Ship Well Abroad (and What to Avoid)

A box of fresh mithai is the classic Raksha Bandhan gift in India. Sent abroad, it can get held at customs or arrive tired. Here is what we have learned from years of shipping to brothers around the world.

Gifts that travel well everywhere

• The rakhi itself. Light, small and welcome in every country. A designer rakhi or a bracelet rakhi he can keep wearing is a lovely choice.
• Rakhi sets. If there are brothers, cousins and nephews in one house, a set of 2, 3 or 5 saves shipping.
• Bhaiya bhabhi pairs. A matching pair includes bhabhi in the celebration.
• Kids rakhis for nephews and nieces who are growing up far from their grandparents.

Gifts that depend on the country

• Chocolates: sealed, branded chocolates are accepted in many countries, but summer heat can be a problem. Check the product page.
• Dry fruits: fine for some destinations, not allowed in others such as Australia and New Zealand.
• Sweets: best kept for deliveries inside India.

Every product page lists the countries it can be delivered to, so you never have to guess.

Small things that make a big difference

1. Write a message at checkout. It is often the part brothers remember most.
2. Order early. A parcel that arrives two days before the festival gives him time to plan the call with you.
3. Send one parcel per household instead of several, to keep shipping costs down.

Country specific advice is in our guides for the USA, UK, Canada, Australia and the UAE.
